President’s Announcements:

The Quiz team played in tonight’s semi final. Unfortunately we lost 73-84.  Congratulations to the team on their excellent efforts in this competition.

 The Hog Roast – joint venture with Whitehaven Castle club. Concerns were raised about the cost of this event. Tickets are expected to cost 20 GBP pp. The band will get 4 free tickets. The maximum number attending will be 80.  President Gordon and 2nd VP Paul will be holding further discussions with Castle.

Secretary’s Announcements:

RC Egremont Charter will be on 15.5.09. Six members are going.

RC Carlisle South: 5.6.09., Shepherd’s Inn, 7 for 7.30, 20 GBP pp, Partners welcome, Formal

Inner Wheel: Their social night will be on Saturday 9.5.09. New College Hall St Bees. 10 GBP pp. Usually a good night and excellent value for money. If you haven’t been to one before now is your chance. The ladies put a great deal of work into it & deserve our support.

Members Announcements:

Tom Milburn: RCs Appleby and Upper Eden are holding the Cross Fell Challenge over the week commencing July 11th.  Volunteers will sleep overnight in a shelter box tent at 2900 ft.  So far there are two volunteers. The club has one space & a draw will be made to see who goes. The club will be expected to raise 490 GBP to sponsor their volunteer; this money will be used to buy a shelter box. Various ideas were expressed re sponsor sheets.

Alan Foster- Faircloth: President Gordon read out a letter which Alan had received from Ryan Gatenby, the Calvert trust candidate. Ryan enjoyed the experience of was appreciative of the opportunities it afforded him.

Harry Harper: Harry thanked the members for their efforts. We finished second in our section of 5 teams in the Darts, Dominoes & Pool.. The winners of our section, Maryport will play Silloth in the final. We finished 3rd in the snooker competition; the winners were Maryport.

Ronnie Proudfoot advised the club of the illness of former club members and Past President John Cottrell. He hopes to visit John tomorrow and will report to the club in due course.

There being no external speaker Secretary David Allan entertained us with an excellent talk about his travels in Alaska and the Far East and a near escape from an air crash.

Next week’s speaker: Sam Griffin. His subject will be bats. The following week’s speaker will be Dick Raz; he will talk about low level waste.

Fellowship Officer: Richard Stout. Fines: J Messenger, B Proctor, G Southward.  Richard then told two stories. One was about a doctor who concurred with a lady patient and congratulad her on her eyesight. The second concerned a mugging in Woodhouse and the difficulty in obtaining reliable testimony.
