President’s  Announcements: President David handed over to Hazel Eady who announced that the Rotary Recipe Book was to be published this Friday, costing £5.00, and proceeds would go to Polio Eradication: the initial print run is for 2000 copies.  Order forms will be with Club Secretaries in the near future.

 

Secretarial Announcements:  Inner Wheel Beetle Drive (last call today); Cockermouth Charter  (10.11); Carlisle Charter (10.11); Workington Charter (24.11).

 

Speaker: Tom Stout and Tony Parker gave an account of their recent RF Exchange to KwaZulu Natal in South Africa.  Accompanied by colour slides, they described their visits to various Rotary Clubs, Zulu War battlefields and wildlife areas, after which Tony discussed the value of these trips and how they fulfil all the aims of Rotary.

 

Vote of Thanks: Mick Eady told how a medal awarded to his great-great-grandfather who had been in the group which relieved the garrison at Rorke’s Drift had come to light in his effects, and how he thus had an interest in this area.

 

RIBI President David:  In his remarks, RIBI President David thanked the Club for their hospitality and mentioned how he had been struck by the beauty of this part of the country.  Among his tasks this week had been a tree-planting in Millom: apparently if every Rotarian planed three trees, the entire carbon footprint of Rotary meetings and conferences would be covered!  Along with fun and fellowship, Rotary cooperation was a way to get things done.

 

Club Draw £5 (Weekly) Nº 870      Winner: Brian Proctor, who immediately ordered a Recipe Book.
