Visits to Other Clubs: Terry O’Connell had attended a recent conference on alcohol and domestic violence at which Workington Rotary Club had donated £500 for recording equipment.

Geoff Burgess had attended a meeting of Whitehaven Castle Club and brought greetings.

President’s  Announcements: Letters of thanks had been received from President David Fowler and DG Mick Eady regarding their recent visit.

Bag packing at Tesco will be on Friday 18th December: a list is circulating on which to sign up.

A matching grant application is being made by Workington to provide water and greenery at a school in Cape Province: this will be discussed at Council.

 

Secretarial Announcements:  Cockermouth Charter  (last call 10th Nov); Carlisle Charter (10th Nov); Workington Charter (24th Nov)

 

Club Members’ Announcements:  Terry O’Connell announced that St James is seeking decorated Christmas trees: Iggesund had undertaken to provide 22, and organisations were being invited to decorate them, both for festive cheer and PR.

VP Paul announced that tickets for the Masonic Ball were still available: details from him.  He also gave details of the Christmas dinner for 120 pensioners at Energus on 16th December from 2 – 4.30.  Energus would provide the food: each of the 10 participating Clubs will find 12 deserving guests.  The Mayor of Copeland, Jamie Reed and Tony Cunningham had been invited (as helpers, not deserving guests!)

 

Speaker: Dr Angela Jackson

 

Subject:  Curries, coconuts, cockroaches and a lot of life/job satisfaction.  The speaker spoke most interestingly about her work in India and the Maldives, training local health workers to implement health programmes.  Among her slides were eloquent pictures of the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami.
