     On this day:

• 1742 - Handel's "Messiah" first performed publicly, in Dublin
• 1912 - Royal Flying Corps formed (later RAF)
• 1970 - Apollo 13, four-fifths of the way to the moon, was crippled when a tank containing liquid oxygen burst. (The astronauts managed to return safely)
• 1990 - The Soviet Union accepted responsibility for the World War II murders of thousands of imprisoned Polish officers in the Katyn Forest, (a massacre the Soviets had previously blamed on the Nazis)
• 1992 - Neil Kinnock resigns as Labour Party leader blaming the Conservative-backed press for his party's defeat at the general election
• 1997 - Tiger Woods wins Masters at 21 - the youngest player ever to do so

President’s  Announcements:

• David Saxon read an Email from David Allan reporting that Cliff Delamere is still in W C Hospital but doing fine and should be out on Wed and back home. (He is currently on Jenkin Ward - first section on left nearest window.)
• Proceeds from President’s Ball are to go towards Epilepsy Research and W C Hospital.
• Letter received from Lodge 8113 expressing appreciation of support for their Ladies’ night.
• Letter received from Tesco confirming suitability of 8^th May for “blood pressure day”.  Geoff Burgess and Ronnie Proudfoot will require support.
• Ladies’ Night finalised for Frid 28^th May @ Lyzzick Hall.  20 places reserved. Transport by members cars. Special ladies to be invited.  Last call next week.

(Assistant) Secretarial Announcements:

• Council Meeting at Moresby Hall, 21st April 2010, 7pm.  Agenda & minutes of previous meeting to be circulated nearer the time.
• One new application for membership received – to be considered by Council.

Club Members’ Announcements

• Paul Berry advised that the President’s Ball (10^th April) had been very successful and raised £980. Members from Lions and Masons had also attended.
• Gordon Southward confirmed that arrangements for Kids Out on 11^th June are in hand.
• Discussion was held regarding the regional final for Young Chef recently held in N Wales.

Fellowship Officer:

Since no joke was initially forthcoming from the Fellowship Officer, Paul Berry offered one with an Irish flavour which provoked the FO into responded with a Geordie offering.
