1882 The present day Eddystone Lighthouse was officially opened. (The fourth lighthouse to be built on the site and took less than 4 years to build.)

1910 The earth passed through the tail of Halley's Comet causing near-panic

1951 Britain’s first four-engined jet bomber, the Vickers Valiant, made its maiden flight

1980 The volcano Mount St Helens blew its top in Washington State, 60 died

President’s Announcements:  Various announcements included:

  • Council Meeting tomorrow evening (19th) at 7:00 pm
  • 7-day letters referring to potential new members Irene Southward and Dorothy Whitfield-Bott will be circulated this week
  • After the successful RIBI ‘Thanks for Life - End Polio Now’ campaign, dates for the 2011 Campaign are Sat 19th to Sat 26th Feb

                        (NB We are now up to $121 million.  The number of reported cases of polio continues to                decrease and the latest World Health Organisation figure is 84 cases worldwide.)

  • Date for 2011 Rotary Awareness Day is Wed 23rd Feb 2011
  • Letter of thanks received from Samaritans for our recent donation of £50
  • Ladies’ Night (Frid 28th May @ Lyzzick Hall) -18 places taken to date. Car sharing arrangements to be made and to include the Special Ladies
  • St Nicholas Coffee Morning (Sat May 29th) - support still needed                                       NB Concern was expressed by various members regarding the apparent lack of   any clear arrangements for this event.  It was emphasised that this is not just   a money raising occasion but also a public relations exercise which would reflect         badly on the Club if it was not conducted properly.                                                      The President undertook to contact Terry O’Connell and after detailed discussion       at tomorrow’s Council Meeting to advise all members in good time of      requirements for baking, tombola / raffle prizes, attendance times, etc

Speaker: Following an introduction by Harry Harper, Mike Reany gave a most interesting talk about the benefits of Green Energy and in particular Heat Pumps.

David Whitfield-Bott proposed the vote of thanks.
